National Association of Professional Women Announces Laura Kirkland-Humble, Owner of Kirkland Brothers, Inc., as VIP Woman of the Year
Garden City, NY (PRWEB) February 20, 2014 -- NAPW honors Lura Kirkland-Humble as a 2013/2014 Professional Woman of the Year for leadership in trucking and truck sales with this prestigious distinction. As the largest, most-recognized organization of women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a powerfully vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 400 Local Chapters.
“I began working at Kirkland Bros. in 1995. I started by answering the phones and filing checks. I guess my dad saw something in me, and I gradually took over exactly what I do now, and handled everything on his behalf from collections, to contracts, to paying the bills,” says Ms. Kirkland-Humble, whose father established the business 1985. She has been successfully running the family-owned business ever since her father’s death in 2006.
As owner of Kirkland Bros., Inc., Ms. Kirkland-Humble is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the business, from overseeing cash flow and accounting duties to managing staff to communicating with banks and other outside vendors. Her organizational skills, business acumen and leadership abilities foster an atmosphere of mutual respect in the workplace.
The mother of two sons, Ms. Kirkland-Humble still tries to balance work with home life. “I have brought my children to work with me from the time they were three weeks old. My dad was always willing to work around what I had going on with the boys. Now that my kids are twelve and sixteen and in school, I tell my employees their kids always come before work,” she says.
Ms. Kirkland-Humble is also very involved with her husband’s business, MKH Transportation, where she has similar responsibilities when it comes to financial tasks and staff. Being able to successfully manage two companies is no easy feat, but it is an industry she is very comfortable in. “I have lived trucks my whole life. For me, the ability to purchase Kirkland Bros., Inc. is the greatest accomplishment so far. I’m looking forward to my next challenge!” says Ms. Kirkland-Humble.
