“Connecting SharePoint’s Managed Metadata Term Store with External Business Data” is the title of a free webinar that will be held Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. EST.

Hosted by PremierPoint Solutions President Jeff Cate, the webinar will explain and demonstrate Term Sync 2.0, a SharePoint add-on that provides the missing link between a company’s business data and its SharePoint taxonomy (internal data).

Term Sync 2.0 was introduced earlier this year as PremierPoint Solutions’ newest version of its Term Sync (Managed Metadata Term Store Sync for SharePoint). Its new features provide support for synchronization of hierarchical term sets and improved performance in processing, resulting in faster synchronization.

Microsoft has made “tagging” using “terms” easy to do in SharePoint through its Managed Metadata feature, and the Managed Metadata Term Store, so that related documents and list items can be organized and easily found.

SharePoint’s Business Connectivity Services (BCS) allows users to import external data important to their business into SharePoint, but it does not provide a way to get that data into one’s Term Store, from which it can be used to tag documents and list items in SharePoint.

“Because Microsoft did not provide a connection between its BCS and the Managed Metadata feature of SharePoint, the two don’t ‘talk’ to each other. This creates a real problem for companies that want to get their external data into their Term Store so they can use it as metadata,” Cate said.

Term Sync 2.0 bridges that gap by connecting the BCS (also known as the data import tool) and the Term Store.

“Term Sync is a seamless way to connect your company’s business data and its SharePoint taxonomy, and having this capability can provide a very beneficial financial impact on an organization,” Cate explained.

With Term Sync, organizations can link and sync business data with SharePoint taxonomy, regardless of whether the user needs to synchronize names, update internal information or simply standardize terminology.

Term Sync installs and is deployed as a SharePoint 2010 or 2013 farm solution. It is sold under two licensing options. Under the first licensing option, Term Sync is licensed by three-pack of Sync Points. Under the second (Enterprise) option, Sync Points are unlimited. (A Sync Point is a logical location within a term store where external data is synced to create and update terms based on the business data.)
