Defeated Tamil Tiger's Political Party (TNA) Backs Opposition Candidate Against Sri Lanka's President in the Upcoming Polls: Sri Lanka News Agency
Colombo, Sri Lanka (PRWEB) December 30, 2014 -- The Sri Lanka News Agency reports that the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which was formed by the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) held a press conference on December 29, 2014 in the Capital Colombo and announced that they will support the opposition candidate in the January 8th Presidential elections to defeat the sitting Sri Lankan President Mahintha Rajapakse.(1)
The new agency further states that "the TNA was formed in 2001 by the Tamil Tigers when Tamil Tigers were very strong and controlling large parts of Tamil areas.(2) TNA endorsed Tamil Tigers as the Sole Tamil Representatives of the Tamil people and fully supported the Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) proposal made by Tamil Tigers.(3) TNA leaders frequently visited the Tiger head quarters and endorsed the armed group's activities."
The news agency further states that the current Sri Lankan President Mr. Rajapakse led a military campaign and defeated Tamil Tigers in 2009, ending a thirty year old campaign by the armed Tamil group. Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Pirapakaran and thousands of others were killed that brought the war to to an end.(4)
"There is deep anger among the Tamil minority for the killing of the Tiger leader Pirabaharan and TNA's decision reflects that reality," said Mr. S. Sinnathamby, a Tamil, who was at the Press Conference.(5)
The news agency states that the Independent analysts believe that the contest is very tight and Tamils can play a king maker role in this elections and this endorsement by TNA may have a serious impact in the outcome.
This election is called two years ahead of schedule.
