Florida Says ‘No’ to Legalizing Medical Marijuana
Lake Worth, FL (PRWEB) January 05, 2015 -- Millennium Treatment Group reports that Florida has said ‘no’ to the legalization of medical marijuana. The ballot measure in Florida, that would permit the use of medical marijuana, has failed to reach the 60 percent mark required for constitutional amendments in the state.
According to an article in the Miami Herald published Nov. 4, 2014, early polls showed support, at least for the concept of medical marijuana, in the 70 percent range. Despite the huge support, current projections show that 58 percent were in approval, with 42 percent against.
The amendment listed qualifying diseases, such as cancer and multiple sclerosis, but doctors would also have the ability to recommend marijuana for patients with other “debilitating” conditions. Critics say that such broad language could result in abuse.
Many supporters are vowing to take the fight to the Florida Legislature. So far, the Florida Legislature has rebuffed any attempt to fully legalize medical marijuana through legislation.
Almost half the country has approved medical marijuana and adopted full-fledged medical marijuana systems through legislation. None of those states, however, had to face Florida’s 60- percent threshold to alter their constitutions.
