Opposition Candidate Maithripala Sirisena Spoke at LTTE Hero’s Park in Jaffna and the Crowds Cheered When Pirapakaran’s Name Was Mentioned: Sri Lanka News Agency
Jaffna, SriLanka (PRWEB) December 31, 2014 -- Sri Lanka News Agency reports that the main campaign meeting of the presidential candidate Mr. Sirisena in Jaffna was held on December 30th at a park named after a LTTE hero, called Colonel Kitu Park.
This Colonel Kittu Park was named after a highly popular Tamil Tiger Jaffna Commander Colonel Kitu, according this news service.
The Sri Lanka News Agency further states that Colonal Kitu successfully led several attacks on Sri Lankan security forces in Jaffna, killing hundreds of Sri Lankan soldiers, injuring many more and capturing several. He was credited for keeping Sri Lankan forces at bay and was feared by the Sri Lankan forces. Tiger forces led by him overran Jaffna Fort, which was serving as the main base of the Sri Lankan forces.
During former President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s speech at this meeting, she mentioned about peace initiatives with LTTE leader Pirapaharan. The crowds cheered loudly when Pirapakaran’s name was mentioned. Mrs. Kumaratunga was taken aback by the cheers for Pirapakaran and stumbled for a while before continued her speech, reports Sri Lanka News Agency.
Mr. Sirisena spoke at length about abuses by the Sri Lankan President Rajapakse and regretted that he was part of that government until recently, reports this news service.
