Westat’s Morganstein Takes Office as President of the ASA
Rockville, Md. (PRWEB) January 05, 2015 -- David Morganstein, Westat Vice President and Director, took office as the 110th president of the American Statistical Association (ASA) on January 1, 2015. As president, Mr. Morganstein will focus on ASA’s mission to increase the visibility of the statistical profession by spearheading four new initiatives: a mentorship program; a docent program for ASA’s annual meeting; a STAT101 toolkit for non-stat educators; and partnering with Sense About Science USA to refocus its blog to promote statistical literacy in the media and society.
“I look forward to serving ASA and its diverse members over the coming year. These initiatives will help enhance media and public understanding of the important contributions our profession makes to the betterment of society,” noted Mr. Morganstein. The initiatives he is directing are both inward and outward looking, and support the association and its members as well as the broader community. Mr. Morganstein believes that they will increase the ASA’s membership base as well as make the field of statistical science more accessible to the public.
Mr. Morganstein has been an active member of the association for more than 40 years and was elected a Fellow of ASA in 1990. He has served on the Board of Directors as treasurer, vice president, president-elect, and now president. He was honored with the ASA’s prestigious Founders Award in 1998 for his many contributions to the association.
Over his career, Mr. Morganstein has worked with more than 75 organizations in North America and internationally in the teaching and use of statistical methods for quality assurance and improvement. He is also a special faculty member in the Joint Program in Survey Methodology, a consortium of the University of Maryland, the University of Michigan, and Westat, and also a member of George Mason University’s Statistics Department Advisory Board.
As president of the ASA, Mr. Morganstein will present the keynote address at the ASA’s 2015 Conference on Statistical Practice, to be held February 19-21 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and preside over the 2015 Joint Statistical Meetings August 8-13 in Seattle, Washington.
