Parker Waichman LLP Comments on First Status Conference in Federal Xarelto Litigation
Port Washington, New York (PRWEB) January 05, 2015 -- Parker Waichman LLP, a national law firm committed to fighting for victims of defective drugs and medical devices, comments on the first upcoming status conference in the federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) over Xarelto's bleeding risks (In Re: Xarelto Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2592). The status conference is scheduled to take place on January 29, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, a pretrial order issued in December 2014 shows. Plaintiffs in the litigation allege that Xarelto, an anticoagulant, caused uncontrollable bleeding. Xarelto is prescribed for blood clot prevention and to patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
According to court documents, the Plaintiffs in the Xarelto MDL also allege that manufacturers Bayer Healthcare and Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, failed to adequately warn about the risk of hemorrhaging associated with the drug. It is also alleged that the Defendants wrongfully touted Xarelto as a superior alternative to warfarin, a medication that has been on the market for decades to prevent blood clots. Warfarin requires blood monitoring and dietary restrictions; unlike Xarelto, however, bleeding may be reversed via Vitamin K administration. The risk of uncontrollable bleeding in Xarelto users was highlighted in a MedPage Today article published on April 22, 2014.
“As a firm that represents numerous individuals who suffered from bleeding complications after taking blood thinners, we are pleased to see this litigation move forward,” said Gary Falkowitz, Managing Attorney at Parker Waichman LLP.
