Pharmacy Advantage and Bayer Partner to Put "Care" Back into Health
Troy, MI (PRWEB) January 07, 2015 -- Pharmacy Advantage – Henry Ford Health System’s affiliated specialty pharmacy- is proud to announce the recent collaboration with Bayer Healthcare on a new clinical adherence program. Ultimately, this objective will facilitate a reduction in unnecessary hospitalizations, diminish abrupt medication discontinuations and improve projected therapeutic outcomes. National studies have substantiated that roughly 50% of patients do not receive full benefits of treatment due to taking prescribed therapies inappropriately. Circumstances behind this staggering statistic can be linked to patient-related factors (socioeconomic, lack of understanding disease, misinterpreting medication instructions), physician-related elements (miscommunication related to overuse of medical terminology) and health system-related influences (fragmented healthcare). Through the launch of this comprehensive initiative, Pharmacy Advantage, Henry Ford and Bayer are hoping to tackle the myriad of barriers with a multifaceted approach to coordinated care.
“According to the World Health Organization, patients recall approximately 50% or less of the information discussed during a typical medical encounter,” says Marcy Donato, PharmD, Oncology Coordinator at Pharmacy Advantage. “As a result, a definite need is present for monitoring patients on more frequent intervals. By implementing the new process, we expect to address therapy tolerance issues sooner through disease education, dosage counseling, side effect management and clinical follow-up thereby fostering therapeutic efficacy.”
As the Patient Support for Oral Oncology Therapy Management program progresses, it is forecasted to shift the current standard of care with a long term vision of developing the best in class clinical guidelines. Recurrent patient interactions with quality dialogue/consultations is a key component to the success of this combined organizational effort. Based on the WHO’s statement that increasing adherence may have a greater effect on health than any improvement in specific medical treatments, Bayer, Henry Ford and Pharmacy Advantage team up to make this claim a reality. Considering the theoretical nature of non-adherence is multi-layered and complex, it must be recognized that the application of only a sustained, targeted undertaking will certify patients receive complete benefits of existing pharmaceutical therapies.
“Bayer, Henry Ford Health System and Pharmacy Advantage (Henry Ford’s affiliated specialty pharmacy), are committed to enhancing patient care and therapeutic outcomes,” says Don Sawyer, SVP, Corporate and Government Customer, Bayer. “In this effort, the program draws on clinical specialists to support the need for medication management and multidisciplinary coordination.”
