My hope is to leverage influence I have to rally colleagues and help convert what we know about lifestyle as medicine into what we do. We could add years to lives, and life to years by doing so. I am totally devoted to advancing this mission.

David Katz, MD, MPH, president of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) and director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center, was recognized for the third year in a row amongst the top 25 in this year’s 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness.

It’s evident that this is a man on a mission. “My hope is to leverage every increment of influence I have, and to rally colleagues, to help convert what we know about lifestyle as medicine into what we do. We could add years to lives, and life to years by doing so, and I am totally devoted to advancing that mission.”

In his role as ACLM president, Dr. Katz speaks often of the pressing need to turn what we know about lifestyle in medicine and lifestyle as medicine into routine action, resulting in our ability to slash global rates of all major chronic diseases by as much as 80 percent.

“We have the potential as clinicians to guide our patients to the spectacular benefits of living better. Lifestyle in clinical practice thus has enormous promise,” emphasizes Katz. “There is even greater promise in culture change that makes healthy living more the norm, and less the exception. The American College of Lifestyle Medicine is a wonderful vehicle for my efforts, since it represents a large and growing cohort of colleagues committed to both of these objectives.

Met with a standing ovation, Dr. Katz recently cast his vision in establishing the GLiMMER Project and its True Health Coalition. This coalition, comprised of leading experts from around the globe will espouse the basic truths about lifestyle as medicine for the purpose, according to Katz, of “helping to drown out the distraction and delay born of noise and nonsense.”

Initial funding has been secured for the GLiMMER pilot, an acronym standing for Global Lifestyle Medicine Movement to Effect Revolution. GLiMMER’s True Health Coalition will soon begin to define the core truths about healthy living on which all agree, while also developing optimal strategies for conveying these truths to the public in an empowering manner. Unveiling of the strategic plan for GLiMMER will take place during Lifestyle Medicine 2015, ACLM’s annual conference, set for November 1-4 in Nashville, TN.

Each year Greatist publishes its 100 Most Influential People in Health list, evaluating all who are recognized based on quantifiable factors such as social reach, research contributions, professional certifications and degrees, trend-setting, products created, and media coverage.

“I am honored and delighted to be on this list, along with some of my very good friends and respected colleagues,” said Katz. “In addition, I appreciate the exposure Greatist provides, because reaching people is really the key to advancing the fields of lifestyle medicine and preventive medicine.”
