Flipping the Classroom: A Data-Driven Model for Nursing Education

Today, during the 2015 Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions Annual Conference, ArcheMedX will receive the 2015 Outstanding Innovation in CPD for the CE/CPD Professional award. This award is in recognition of the innovative design and impact of the “Flipping the Classroom: A Data-Driven Model for Nursing Education” initiative that was developed by Dr. Brian S. McGowan, Chief Learning Officer of ArcheMedX, in collaboration with Drs. Jann Balmer of the University of Virginia Health System and Kathy Chappell of the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Given in honor of Rafael Sanchez, MD, dedicated physician, educator, and CME leader, this award recognizes outstanding innovation in continuing professional development. This year’s award winner, “Flipping the Classroom: A Data-Driven Model for Nursing Education” initiative, leverages a data-centric approach to blended learning and includes an innovative online series of educational modules powered by the ArcheViewer, a data-driven e-learning software platform, to optimize a one-day symposium designed for continuing education (CE) planners and faculty.

-- About the Flipping the Classroom Initiative --

The goals of the initiative were to maximize learning opportunities associated with a one-day symposium; expose nurse educators to a data-driven version of the flipped classroom using the Learning Actions Model as a potential tool for their own use, and to increase the efficiency of learning by combining pre-work and agile educational planning with a small, working group classroom experience.

The pre-work included a series of video-based activities created to introduce the science of continuing education. In all, 11 videos ranging in length from 6 to 11 minutes were produced to explore the science of learning and professional development, including modules on the Natural Learning Actions, Adult Learning Theory, Behavior Change and many more.

Following the principles of the Learning Actions Model, learners were encouraged to reflect, take synchronized notes, set personalized reminders, search through related resources, and ask questions of faculty as they moved through the content. In addition, faculty created educator notes and interactive polls timed to appear at specific learning moments throughout the activity. This approach, powered by the ArcheViewer eLearning platform, led to completion rates across the 11 video-based lessons exceeding 95%.

At the symposium, 76% of the respondents claimed that by interacting in the more structured online modules they were better prepared to engage with symposium faculty and to be more active learners. More importantly, analysis of these online learning experiences, helped planners refine and personalize the live classroom experience to match the insights captured from the pre-work of each learner.
