Andrew Poulos, EA, ABA, ATP, a nationally syndicated tax software expert, recently announced his picks for the top online tax software for tax year 2014. TurboTax by Intuit won the Editor’s Choice award.
The awards, judged collaboratively between Poulos and his research team at http://www.reviews.com, are designed to help taxpayers make a more informed decision when it comes to self-preparing their tax returns. This year’s winners was broken down into three categories, including Top 6 Online Software, Best Online Tax Software for Beginners and Best Online Tax Software or Small Business. For the third consecutive year, TurboTax ranks among is on the top on Poulos’ list.
“TurboTax provides the best overall design and has great customer support,” said Poulos, principal of Poulos Accounting & Consulting, Inc., in Atlanta, Ga. “Its ability to handle simple and complex tax scenarios makes it the best software on the market.”
Coming in at second place is H&R Block, which he says will be integral in battling tax complexities.
“With the Affordable Care Act laws taking effect for 2014, those who self prepare will see more complexity in their tax returns and may require in person support. H&R Block’s ability to offer counsel on the ACA at their retail centers will give them a competitive edge now, and into the future, when they prepare tax returns and provide sound advice for customers.”
Rounding out the list is TaxAct ranked third, E-Smart Tax fourth, TaxSlayer fifth and Jackson Hewitt in sixth place. Poulos gives E-Smart Tax, a Liberty Tax Service, the nod over TaxSlayer because of its recent redesign interface, competitive price and more than 4,000 retail locations that offer in person support.
“Overall, I expect online tax software providers to see a shift this year, with customers focused more on support rather than price,” he said.
