Consultant Stephen Sheppard Advises on Financing Femto Laser Technology

Medical business consultant Stephen Sheppard offers advice in an Outpatient Surgery magazine article on buying, leasing, and outsourcing femto laser technology when incorporating it into a practice.

In a January 2015 article titled "Can You Afford A Femto Laser?" published by Outpatient Surgery magazine, author Stephen Sheppard offers “a quick economics lesson” for eye care providers considering whether to buy, lease, or outsource femtosecond laser equipment.

Sheppard brings up and answers several questions about the financial options available to providers when “going the femto route.” Questions such as, “How many cases are needed to make it cost-effective?” and, “At what point does it make sense to think about leasing or buying instead of outsourcing?” He even covers what providers should expect in terms of durability and improving technology.

As an ASC development and management consultant and a managing principal at Medical Consulting Group, LLC, Steve Sheppard is familiar with the rise and fall of past and present technologies within the ophthalmic market. “Clearly,” he states, “the market is embracing the potentially profitable technology and more and more providers are trying to decide whether they can—or should—find a way to incorporate the equipment into their practices.”
