More Clients Choosing Primaris for PQRS GPRO, New Tool Streamlines Process

Primaris recently hired 17 new abstractors to help with the heavy PQRS abstraction season, beginning January 26. Primaris' clients will gain access to a new, custom PQRS abstraction tool that will streamline the data process, improve abstractor efficiency and accuracy and allow for real-time data monitoring.

Our abstractors review the record and narratives to find additional information that contradicts what was electronically pulled in from the data warehouse. The result is higher scores that more accurately reflect the provider's performance.

Primaris, a healthcare quality-improvement consulting firm, is gearing up for a busy Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) season. After completing a 2013 PQRS Group Practice Reporting Option (GPRO) pilot, Primaris customer base for PQRS GPRO services has grown quickly.

PQRS’ short timeframe coupled with the enormity of records that have to be abstracted require someone with professional abstraction expertise and the staffing to absorb the workload.

Primaris’ client abstraction work will begin Jan. 26 and is expected to last 6 weeks. During that time, Primaris expects to perform 25,000 abstractions. Seventeen new abstractors have been hired and trained to assist in the project, joining 20 existing quality measure abstractors.

The client-vendor process will be streamlined this year with the introduction of a new PQRS Abstraction Tool. The customer downloads their data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in an XML format. Whereas previously the XML format had to be changed over to Excel and pre-populated with medical record numbers, the tool allows the customer to submit their data directly to Primaris in XML format.

The new tool also increases abstractor efficiency, reduces abstraction errors, and allows the customer to review their scores in real-time as the abstractors are abstracting the record. Once abstraction work is completed, Primaris uses the tool to create a report on findings and opportunities for improvement.
