Peña Boulevard Paving Project to be Recognized at World of Concrete 2015

Hanley Wood has announced that the Peña Boulevard Paving Project at the Denver International Airport has been selected as the winner of the 2015 Triad Award, which honors projects employing portland-limestone cement (PLC) as a key element of success, especially in infrastructure construction. The award is sponsored by CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION, THE CONCRETE PRODUCER, and PUBLIC WORKS magazines.

Projects considered for the 2015 Triad Awards were submitted from across the United States, highlighting a wide range of PLC applications: interstates, a main street revitalization, a county judicial building, a bridge, pervious pavement, and a football stadium. All projects were completed between 2013 and 2015. The Triad Award jury selected one overall winner and identified three additional projects for special recognition, based on project team coordination, innovative use of materials, and sustainability.

“With this annual award, we seek to honor outstanding publicly-owned concrete projects that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and leadership,” says Bill Palmer, editorial director. The 2015 Triad Award program focuses on projects utilizing portland-limestone cement (PLC) to improve durability and reduce the carbon footprint of concrete, especially in the areas of infrastructure construction.

Experts involved in the 2015 Triad Award-winning Peña Boulevard PLC Paving Project, along with team members from Triad Award runner-up projects, will share their experiences using portland-limestone cement at a Luncheon and Forum to be held in conjunction with World of Concrete 2015 in Las Vegas, February 5. Holcim (US) will sponsor the event, titled, "Building Successful Public Projects through Innovation, Sustainability, and Leadership.”

“Portland-limestone cements will help the concrete industry improve the future built environment without changing the way ready mix producers currently do business,” says Filiberto Ruiz, Holcim president and chief executive officer. “What better venue than World of Concrete to share PLC success stories and educate attendees on the myriad benefits this blended material can have on the construction industry and their businesses?"

Replacing the main roadway to the busy Denver International Airport required close coordination between project principles and a high level of technical expertise. Castle Rock Construction replaced the existing concrete pavement, which had severe alkali-silica reactivity damage, with 11-inch dowelled concrete. The airport’s heavy use of magnesium chloride deicer required effective drainage features, to minimize chemical concentration in specific areas. Roadway improvements included adding a trench drain along the entire roadway, and a 12-foot shoulder with curb and rail for safety.
