An infection with the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), which is a member of the herpes family of viruses, may lead to blindness. This can happen when the virus actively replicates throughout a condition known as Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO). A new study found that large numbers of antibodies against EBV (proteins used by the immune system to identify and neutralize the EBV virus) exist in people with NMO. (1) “Individuals with NMO develop optic neuritis, which causes pain in the eye and vision loss.” (See the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, last updated January 15, 2015) (2) Patients who experience a rapid onset of blindness in one or both eyes, followed within days or weeks by varying degrees of paralysis in the arms and legs may receive a diagnosis of NMO. There is currently no cure for this condition, and no FDA approved therapies. There are, however, two natural products, which were shown to reduce EBV related symptoms in two separate post-marketing clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The formula of Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The studies showed that the Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR formula is effective against the herpes family of viruses. The Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is a member of the herpes family. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs. Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with the EBV … reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (3) The study authors also wrote that, “We observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (3)
Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinesis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. The first ingredient is a trace element, and the other four are plant extracts. Each ingredient and its dose was chosen through a scientific approach. According to the CDC, almost everyone becomes infected with the Epstein Barr Virus at some point in their lives. When this happens, after an initial active phase, the virus then enters a latent (slightly dormant) phase where it lives deep in the nerves for the life of the individual.
The CDC notes that “EBV spreads most commonly through bodily fluids, especially saliva. Some doctors wrongly believe that latent viruses are inactive, that is, the viruses show no transcription (production of proteins) and no shedding. According to these doctors, since the virus is inactive, it is harmless. However, the evidence is building that latent viruses are active, although on a reduced scale, and are still dangerous.
Is there any treatment for NMO?
“There is no cure for NMO and no FDA-approved therapies, but there are therapies to treat an attack while it is happening, to reduce symptoms, and to prevent relapses. Any prescribed drugs to treat the disorder are done off-label.” (2)
What treatments are available for EBV infections?
“A few antiviral drugs are available that were shown to inhibit EBV replication in cell culture. These drugs include the acyclic nucleoside analogues aciclovir, ganciclovir, penciclovir, and their respective prodrugs valaciclovir, valganciclovir and famciclovir, the acyclic nucleotide analogues cidofovir and adefovir, and the pyrophosphate analogue foscarnet. However, clinical studies have shown that these drugs are mostly ineffective in humans.” (3) There are also natural antiviral products that studies show to be safe and effective in reducing EBV symptoms.
