It turns out that most people are asking for travel and dinner, meaning consumers might have to spend more than they had expected if they want to make their partner happy this Valentine’s Day.

An Offers.com survey found that U.S. adults will only spend about $54 each on Valentine’s Day gifts this year. Although the spending limit is low, most people are still hoping for gifts that are all about the experience and a bit pricier than what most are willing to spend.

“Our survey showed that 71% of those celebrating Valentine’s Day will spend $50 or less on gifts," said Offers.com Savings Expert Howard Schaffer. “It turns out that most people are asking for travel and dinner, meaning consumers might have to spend more than they had expected if they really want to impress their partner this Valentine’s Day.”

The Valentine’s Day Rundown
There is a bit of a gap between what people want and what they are willing to spend this year. The average U.S. adult plans to spend only $54 on Valentine’s Day gifts, but when asked about their dream gift, the majority picked a trip or vacation.

  • 59% of the U.S. adult population will celebrate Valentine’s Day this year.
  • The most popular Valentine’s gift people want to receive is a trip or vacation (43%), followed by dinner (17%), a new pet (8%), and jewelry (6%).
  • Men will spend more than women ($61 vs. $47).

The Difference Between Men & Women
Though the majority of men (51%) and women (55%) say they celebrate Valentine’s Day to spend quality time with their partner, the remaining respondents celebrate for very different reasons.

  • 13% of women say they celebrate because they enjoy giving gifts, and an additional 13% say they do it because everyone else does.
  • 12% of men say they celebrate because they feel obligated, and an additional 11% say they are just hoping to get lucky.

“Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day with small gifts or a romantic getaway, there are always ways to save,” said Schaffer. “You can start by searching the best deals and sales at our Valentine’s Day Saving Center.”
