Spring Break: What Parents Need to Know - World Nomads
Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) February 04, 2015 -- As teenagers cram for their exams, their parents face a test of nerves as their college-aged children prepare for their Spring Break.
Adventure travel insurance company World Nomads says parents should help their kids prepare for a safe and stress-free unescorted vacation.
“It’s a rite of passage and parents are understandably concerned about the horror stories they hear about Spring Break behavior,” says World Nomads Regional Manager for the Americas, Christina Tunnah. “But armed with the right information plus travel insurance, college students can protect themselves and their gear from disaster.”
“There’s no doubt that drinking is a big part of Spring Break culture. While plenty of kids go and have a good time without incident, it’s worth noting statistics cited by the CDC about youth drinking,” Ms Tunnah said.
• 1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die from alcohol-related injuries, including car crashes.
• 696,000 students aged 18-24 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking.
• 400,000 students aged 18-24 had unprotected sex and more than 100,000 students aged 18-24 report having been too drunk to know if they consented to having sex.
Ms Tunnah said travelers should take precautions like going out in groups, keeping their precious phones and gear secured in inner pockets (or better yet, locked in the hotel safe), plus telling someone where they’re going and when they expect to return. It is especially important for women to be mindful of their safety, she said.
“If you don’t have a designated driver, have a plan for getting back to the hotel that doesn’t rely on someone driving,” she said. “Parents can help by teaching their children some commonsense safety and security skills. And get covered – you don’t want their big Spring Break to be an arm or a leg.”
