Barbara Vanderkloot has been named president and CEO of Carstens, Inc., one of the nation’s top suppliers of patient record keeping solutions for the healthcare industry. The daughter of founder George Block, she has taken the helm after becoming sole owner of the company.

“I am honored to continue the legacy of my parents, George and June Block, and keep Carstens as a family owned business—hopefully for generations to come,” she said. “My parents always considered Carstens’ employees as extended family and I look forward to fostering those relationships to help the company and our dedicated staff reach new heights.”

Founded more than 125 years ago, Carstens pioneered putting patient information and medication dispensing at the point of care with customized records systems and workstations. As the healthcare industry has evolved, Carstens has expanded its line of EHR support products, offering innovative solutions for paper based record keeping as well as the integration of electronic solutions at the point-of-patient care.

“We have seen many changes and challenges in the healthcare environment, especially over the past few years,” said Vanderkloot. “We have responded by turning many of these challenges into opportunities—developing product offerings that provide solutions to some of the most pressing issues in healthcare. Today, we are introducing exciting new products that strengthen Carstens in the electronic age and position us as an innovative company on the cutting edge of technology.”

As an example, Carstens recently debuted its newest line of wall-mounted workstations: the WALLAroo® with ISONAS™. ISONAS™ delivers a proven access control solution that offers network-based, “Pure IP” technology to securely manage an entire facility. One swipe card can control thousands of access points—doors, gates, elevators, server racks, and now WALLAroo® cabinets—all from a standard network connection. Carstens is the exclusive provider of this technology on medical cabinets and mobile carts.

Additionally, Carstens has added new and improved carts and workstations for general usage, diagnostic testing, medicine dispensing, computing, and more. In 2013, the company introduced the LinkT™, a mobile workstation that is configurable to support and transport medical supplies, equipment and instruments; computers and electronics; and patient information while offering efficient mobility and enhanced comfort.

“Moving forward, our goal is to improve workflow in the healthcare setting through innovative solutions that also enhance patient satisfaction,” said Vanderkloot.

Today, Carstens’ products are designed to enhance communication and increase interaction between clinicians and patients at the point of care. They can be customized to match any facility’s specific needs. Plus, all are made in the USA at the company’s Chicago area headquarters.
