Today at DistribuTECH QualityLogic announced the industry's first Conformance Test Program for the IEEE 2030.5 Smart Energy Profile 2.0 (SEP 2) Standard. SEP 2 is an emerging standard for applications that enable home energy management via wired and wireless devices that support Internet Protocol.

The Conformance Test Program uses the tests defined by the Consortium for SEP 2 Interoperability (CSEP - http://www.csep.org) for its Phase 1 certification test harness release. QualityLogic's SEP 2 test tools have been approved by CSEP as the first official certification test harness for SEP 2.

"In order to further the maturity and interoperability of the SEP 2 standard, QualityLogic is offering its customers and the industry a program to independently validate that implementations conform to the CSEP certification standard," said James Mater, GM Smart Grid at QualityLogic. "This program is intended to accelerate the adoption of SEP 2 technology and products and lay the groundwork for an official industry certification program of the future."

The Program includes a vendor-specified conformance statement; independent testing by QualityLogic or an affiliated test lab; a published statement of conformance; and public announcement and listing of conformant SEP 2 products.

"The emergence of SEP 2 in home energy management applications provides potential benefit for utilities and their customers," said Denver Hinds, Lab Manager at Sacramento Municipal Utility District. "The test program will save us valuable effort and time in considering bringing SEP 2 compatible solutions to our customers."

"We've been waiting for such a program to be developed," said Rick Kornfeld, CEO of Grid2Home, the leading supplier of SEP 2 technology to vendors worldwide. "This program will jumpstart adoption of SEP 2 and greatly reduce product integration costs and schedules."

The Conformance Test Suite consists of 31 tests for the five Core Function Sets (TLS, CERT, DNS, DCAP, TM) required of all products tested. Another 65 tests are included for eight optional function sets, such as Demand Response and Metering. The combination of the Core and specific Optional function sets is required to implement specific products, such as smart thermostats, in-home displays and load controllers.

All products submitted for testing are required to be on a certified communication protocol layer platform – e.g., Bluetooth, HomePlug, Wifi, ZigBee, or other TCP/IP based protocol.

There is a minimum cost of $5,000 for conducting Client or Server Core Function Set tests and a minimum of $1,000 for each Optional Function Set included in the Conformance Test Program.
