The World's Top Cartoonists Team Up to Release 'I Am Charlie'
Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) February 06, 2015 -- In response to the horrific attacks on their colleagues in Paris, the world’s top cartoonists have teamed up to produce “I Am Charlie,” a book featuring the top Charlie Hebdo editorial cartoons published around the globe.
All proceeds will go to the Committee to Protect Journalists, the New York-based organization devoted to promoting freedom of the press and protecting the rights of journalists throughout the world.
The book, which will be released both in both ebook and physical form, will include 86 Charlie Hebdo cartoons created by artists in Europe, the Middle East, The Americas, Australia, and Asia.
"You can't help but be inspired by the way cartoonists around the world responded to the murder of their colleagues at Charlie Hebdo. This book collects their impassioned reactions, expressing not only the depths of outrage but a courageous commitment to critical journalism and the fundamental human right of press freedom," said Jacob Weisberg, Chairman of The Slate Group and CPJ Board member.
International artists represented in the book include Osama and Emad Hajjaj from Jordan, Michael Kountouris from Greece, Frederick Deligne of France, Angel Boligan from Mexico, Matador from Columbia, Joep Bertrams of The Netherlands, and Paresh Nath from the UAE. The book also includes the work of Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonists Steve Sack, Michael Ramirez, Steve Benson, and Mike Luckovich.
The book features an introduction from Daryl Cagle, cartoonist and founder of the leading editorial cartoon site politicalcartoons.com. The book is edited by Andrew Pillsbury, former head of business development at The New Yorker Magazine’s cartoon division.
“Artists around the world reacted swiftly to the events in Paris, creating some of the more powerful cartoons related to free speech that have ever been published,” said Pillsbury. “The cartoons in this book tell a compelling story that serves as a counterweight to last month’s attacks.”
Editorial cartoon syndicates supporting the project include Creators Syndicate, Cagle Cartoons, and Universal Uclick. Consumer preorders and purchases will be handled via Gumroad, the Kleiner Perkins-backed online commerce platform. In addition, Gumroad will make the book available for in-tweet purchases.
The physical book will retail for $14.99, the ebook will retail for $9.99. The book is now available for preorder, and will ship to consumers February 21.
