South African Community-Minded Student Starts Mid-Year with Oaks Christian Online High School
Westlake Village, CA (PRWEB) February 07, 2015 -- New Oaks Christian Online School (OCO) junior, Luyolo Matyumza, had the flexibility to start her Junior year online in January of this year. Luyolo went to a Quaker high school in Delaware until the end of her sophomore year when she became homesick for her mother in South Africa. Her mom had received an undergraduate degree in education while in the United States and then returned home to work in an international school and continue her graduate degree online with Concordia University. Because Luyolo’s previous school had been International Baccalaureate based, she found herself looking for a rigorous, Christian, college-preparatory education online, and she found it with Oaks Christian Online High School in Westlake Village, CA. Thanks to OCO's flexible schedule, abundance of college-preparatory classes and world-wide reach, Luyolo was able to take care of her school concerns with geography and timing by enrolling online with Oaks Christian. “I was involved in every activity imaginable in Delaware, including being the journalism editor, playing volleyball, and playing trumpet in the band,” Luyolo states. “I want to continue that work-ethic and excitement while I’m in South Africa. I’d love to attend New York University some day, and I believe that Oaks Christian Online High School can help me stay involved and accomplish that.”
Luyolo also has a love for community service. In Delaware she was part of the Best Buddies program, founded in 1989 by Anthony Shriver, that creates opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She even attended a national leadership conference and was inspired by what people all over the United States were doing to promote disability rights. Her school also championed the Quakeover Cancer foundation, and Luyolo helped organize a dance-a-thon with B+ (Be Positive) that raised over $20,000 for the foundation. Luyolo plans to share these passions with her new, accredited online high school. “I know that our online Spiritual Life class also has a community service component, and I’m excited to see what I can do to start a Best Buddies chapter with Oaks Christian Online School during my first semester and perhaps even start a chapter in Pretoria. There is a lot of room for growth in disabilities ministry in South Africa.”
