The IMPACT Society Brings SADD Shines Day to Maryland presenting students with a Proclamation from Governor Larry Hogan
Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) February 05, 2015 -- The IMPACT Society and South River High School SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) hosted an assembly on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, to celebrate SADD Shines Day 2015 with an engaging, multi-faceted performance bringing local flavor to the national Youth Lighting the Way theme.
The performance featured SADD student leadership, a South River High School alumnus sharing his personal story about destructive decisions and what it took to overcome the consequences of them, original music from The IMPACT Society’s New Youth Culture Tour band, a Proclamation presentation given by representatives from Governor Hogan’s Office and Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh’s Office, a special lighting ceremony and the signing of a Pledge Card by students to keep themselves and their peers safe as they navigate the turbulent waters of adolescence.
"I am very proud to declare February 4 SADD Shines Day, and to join with the IMPACT Society to raise awareness about prevention education and peer to peer support to combat addiction and other destructive decisions,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Peer to peer support and prevention education are the best tools we have to end the cycle of addiction and provide the opportunity for all young Marylanders to succeed. It is my hope that this is the first step of many to bring SADD and peer to peer support to every middle and high school in Maryland."
This assembly is one of six events held following Governor Hogan’s official declaration that February 4, 2015, is SADD Shines Day in the state of Maryland, celebrating the power of positive peer support and honoring its commitment to positive decision-making and healthy lifestyles. Other Counties presenting proclamations included Baltimore County, Howard County, Montgomery County, Prince George County and Frederick County.
The IMPACT Society oversees leadership for SADD activities in Maryland as the official State Coordinator. The IMPACT Society was awarded this role in December 2014. Prior to this, SADD had lacked leadership in Maryland for over a decade and saw a substantial decline in the number of chapters as a result. The IMPACT Society aims to provide active support to existing chapters and propel the establishment of new chapters in a collective effort to provide effective prevention education to young people throughout the state.
State Farm provided The IMPACT Society with a $25,000 Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant to support its efforts in the community. The Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant aims to help organizations build safer, stronger and better educated communities.
