TriStar Plastics announces that Rulon® materials have been tested and validated for providing superior authenticity and quality control, based on a new paper by Harvard University’s Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Rulon is a premium, uniquely-formulated plastic bearing material that is widely counterfeited in the plastics industry.
Entitled “Using Magnetic Levitation for Non-Destructive Quality Control of Plastic Parts*,” the paper uncovers how samples of authentic Rulon and look-alike counterfeits were tested for embedded defects such as porosity and incorrect levels or types of modifiers and reinforcing elements. These defects can cause plastic materials to fail in demanding manufacturing applications.
Test results show that TriStar’s genuine Rulon J, Rulon 641 and Rulon LR samples levitated at significantly different levels when compared to counterfeit samples; resulting in a “reproducible difference in density between real and fake Rulon.” Without proper density, plastic materials can crack and otherwise degrade when assembled into completed parts.
