Sierra Regional Spine Institute Recently Joined the Health Information Exchange
Reno, NV (PRWEB) February 09, 2015 -- Sierra Regional Spine Institute has joined the Nevada branch of the Health Information Exchange (HIE). The practice, which offers treatment options for people who suffer from back pain, joined the HIE to help contribute to the larger, ultimate goal of improving patient care.
“Ultimately, the goal of any Health Information Exchange is for each state exchange to connect to a national exchange so that the patient's health record can be accessed by healthcare providers anywhere in the country,” said Penny Forbes, Practice Administrator at Sierra Regional Spine Institute.
Since the HIE is a platform that allows doctors to access patients’ healthcare records in real time, it is expected to improve patient care by preventing duplicate tests, offering a comprehensive view of a patient’s history, and provide a safe and secure place for the information. The information is provided to all doctors, hospitals, and practices that participate in the HIE upon authorization of the patient.
“The mission of the health information exchange is for a patient to receive quality healthcare without redundancy or error by providing a single source records access point to all healthcare providers,” Forbes added.
The HIE gives physicians access to immunization records, x-rays, test results, medications, and clinical reports, which means that they no longer have to rely on patient memory when providing care.
Participation in the HIE largely began in hospitals, since they have more funds to accommodate the interface that the HIE uses and also have better resources for recruiting physicians to participate.
Sierra Regional Spine Institute recently joined the HIE to participate in an initiative that helps improve patient care -– the more physicians who participate in the HIE, the more effective it is.
The process to join the HIE took the practice about two weeks, but implementation will take a little longer; interacting with HIE requires a specific interface, the cost of which needs to be authorized by the practice’s budget.
