Perkins Eastman Joins Winthrop-University Hospital in Celebrating Ribbon Cutting at Research and Academic Center
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 10, 2015 -- Top international design and architecture firm Perkins Eastman recently joined Winthrop-University Hospital in a special ribbon cutting celebration to mark the grand opening of the new Research and Academic Center. Designed by Perkins Eastman, the 95,000 sf translational research and academic facility will foster state-of-the art research in the treatment and prevention of pediatric and adult diabetes in collaboration with patient care and community education. The Winthrop-University Hospital Research and Academic Center is located at 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola, New York, and is expected to be fully operational in April 2015.
Perkins Eastman Principal Evan Weremeychik AIA, LEED AP says, “Perkins Eastman has been privileged to continue our longstanding history with Winthrop-University Hospital by designing the new Research and Academic Center, a building that will serve the surrounding community and the larger medical community in its groundbreaking research.” He continues, “We are proud to have designed a building that will both serve as a gateway to Mineola and an organizer for the bustling periphery of the Winthrop-University Hospital academic health center campus.”
The design for the five-floor building embodies the spirit of the groundbreaking translational study and research that it will house. The Center was designed to enable information to move between the research, caregiver, education, and community outreach environments to the benefit of patient care, and to inspire chance encounters between these diverse groups that will help further ideas and inspire breakthroughs. To encourage this interaction, open, flexible laboratories connect to the clinical research and patient care environments through communal spaces. In addition, a large open circulation stair, populated with small conversation zones, encourages interaction between, the ground-floor education and community outreach functions and the upper floors, visibly promoting the interactive and health-oriented mission of the translational environment.
Key features of the design include:
• Intuitive building layout intended to engage community and encourage the use of stairs to promote exercise among visitors
• Building angled off the street grid so as to enhance visual connectivity to the village and Winthrop-University Hospital, as well
as for the building’s maximum solar efficiency
• Green roof and water retention and treatment system
• Basement-level research support space and below-grade parking
“This magnificent new building signifies a reaffirmation of Winthrop’s commitment to our mission of caring for the sick and injured, teaching physicians, and research. The Research and Academic Center also symbolizes Winthrop’s resolve to ensuring our future and our deep belief that we have a moral obligation to continue to serve the medical needs of our surrounding community—both now and in the future,” said John F. Collins, President and CEO of Winthrop-University Hospital.
Specific program features:
• Adult and Pediatric Endocrinology Suite
• Clinical Trials Center
• Expanded Simulation Center for innovative training
• 350-seat amphitheater for school and community lectures
• Classrooms for medical students who live and study on the Winthrop campus as part of the Stony Brook University School of
Medicine
• Entire floor for future bench research, providing wet laboratory space, laboratory support functions, and administrative area
