Telematics and the connected car are transforming the value chain, forcing insurers –among other players- to rethink their role in the car ecosystem.
(PRWEB) February 11, 2015
Advances in connected car technology are driving changes in the traditional business model of motor insurance at a rapid pace. Usage based insurance (UBI) has demonstrated to insurers that telematics data can give an unprecedented insight to, not just driving behaviour, but customer behaviour also.
Automakers are regarded as the gate keepers to vehicle data and so new relationships with insurers are necessary. BMW and Allianz, and more recently Fiat and UBI provider Carrot Car Insurance, are just two recent examples of partnerships in this space and the shifting value chain within motor insurance.
Jonathan Hewett, the chief marketing officer with Octo Telematics has noted, “Telematics and the connected car are transforming the value chain, forcing insurers –among other players- to rethink their role in the car ecosystem.”
