Orion™, Voxeleron’s cross-platform optical coherence tomography (OCT) analysis software, now available to the research community

Orion by Voxeleron

Voxeleron introduces Orion, advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) research software.

The speed, accuracy, and ability to process scans from different instruments is valuable, and the tools provided in the software are very user friendly.

Orion™ is an application that offers fully-automated, rapid and accurate segmentation of seven layers in OCT images of the human retina. Currently for research use only, the award-winning software is platform independent - meaning it processes data from different OCT devices - and is now available following extensive beta testing.

“We used Orion to process a considerable amount of data and found it to be a very useful research tool. The analysis tools that come with some of the OCT devices do not offer the functionality we need to do some of our fundamental clinical research, so Orion is a very powerful adjunct offering,” said Pablo Villoslada, M.D., Ph.D., IDIBAPS Group Leader, pathogenesis and new treatments in multiple sclerosis.

As an extension of the central nervous system, the retina consists of layers of neuronal tissue. The ability to precisely measure these retinal structures helps gauge the health of the eye, and offers direct anatomical correlates to the brain's structure and its overall health. Early detection of these diseases can offer a number of potential interventional options and clinical endpoints. Orion™ offers the ability to accurately isolate and quantify these layers, empowering fundamental clinical research.

“I find Orion to be a very useful tool for segmenting both human and non-human primate scans," said Nimesh Patel, O.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor at the University of Houston. "The speed, accuracy, and ability to process scans from different instruments is valuable, and the tools provided in the software are very user friendly.”

Orion™ is targeted at anyone dealing with data from different devices and lacking relevant OCT-based biomarkers: CROs and reading centers burdened with the laborious task of manual segmentation, and clinical researchers overwhelmed by data and hamstrung by the limited image analysis tools available.
