Irish Eyes Will be Smilin’ in Westchester
A musical show celebrating the Irish spirit will take place at Empire City Casino in Yonkers with performances by Shileagh Law and Celtic Cross, the exceedingly popular New York City-based Irish-American bands, on Sunday March 8 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Pipes and Drums of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester comprised of police officers from many of the 39 police departments in Westchester will also perform. Tickets are priced at just $17 and can be purchased online or in the Empire City Casino at the second floor redemption cashier. Empire City Casino is one of the largest entertainment destinations in the northeast, featuring 5,300 of the hottest slots, electronic craps, roulette, baccarat and sic bo; year-round harness racing and international simulcasting; live entertainment including the best party, tribute and Latin bands, comedy and more. Come to the 18th Annual City of White Plains St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 14. The parade kicks off at noon and celebrates the contributions of the Irish through their rich culture and music, their indomitable courage and spirit, and their legendary warmth and humor. The celebration continues in White Plains after the parade with the Cultural Tour that provides an opportunity to visit many nearby venues for all the corned beef and cabbage one can eat, as well as other food and drinks with lots of Irish music and dance. The 60th Annual Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Saturday, March 21. The parade will kick off at 1:00 p.m. on McLean Avenue in Yonkers near Bronx River Road, marching west on McLean Avenue to Coyne Park. Timothy Rooney, Jr., General Counsel for the Empire City Casino, will be the Grand Marshall of the event complemented with music and culture. On Sunday, March 22, head over to the 4th Annual Sound Shore St. Patrick’s Day Parade kicking off at 1:30 p.m. on Mamaroneck Avenue in Mamaroneck. Leading the way as the Grand Marshall will be Robert H. McCooey, Jr., who has been deeply involved in the community. In addition to the parade, which attracts thousands of spectators, various events and activities in support of Irish-American culture in neighboring communities will take place. ArtsWestchester, the largest, private, not-for-profit arts council in New York State, is celebrating its 50th anniversary year with ARTSEE: A Festival of New Work, featuring more than 70 arts events at more than 40 cultural venues throughout Westchester County. The much-anticipated celebration of the arts will start in March and run through July. Packed with dance, film, theatre, art exhibitions, concerts, conferences, open studios, poetry readings and more, the festival will celebrate the creative spirit in Westchester. To kick off the ARTSEE, ArtsWestchester will host Crossing Borders: Memory and Heritage in a New America at its gallery in White Plains on March 17. One of the opening exhibits and a major part of the festival, Crossing Borders, highlights the work of new and first-generation American artists who use their autobiographies and family history as an artistic tool to explore universal concerns of memory, heritage and identity.
