Harbor Village Detox comments on the necessity of admitting drug addicts and mental health patients into the correct treatment facilities, as opposed to being confined in jails who are understaffed to handle the burden.

There is a reason that there are professionally trained addiction counselors, and it is because these people need help to really do well in society. Subjecting them to circumstances where that treatment is denied them is risky

The Indy Star reported on Feb. 2nd that a change in legislation will soon release low offending prisoners to jail in Franklin County. Local officials are concerned that the swell of drug addicts and those suffering from mental health disorders will suffer because their jails are not properly staffed, nor equipped to effectively treat either condition. Conversely, local officials are not keen to allow untreated drug addicts and mental health patients free to roam without treatment or supervision from the state. There are 14,000 low level offenders who are set to make the move from prison to jail. Harbor Village Detox is a detoxification facility nestled in serene south Florida. The treatment center offers halfway house services for those suffering from substance use disorders around the nation. The facility is extending its drug and alcohol treatment services to the families of those affected by this recent change of protocol in Indianapolis.

According to the Indy Star, low level offenders will be disbursed between jails, which are meant to hold people awaiting sentencing. Local officials are concerned that those in need of drug rehabilitation treatment and extensive arrays of medications will forgo treatment; jails are are ill equipped to handle the special cases of their new residents.

Overcrowding concerns make this transition increasingly complicated. Murphy asserts that the new law will financially tax jails and community correction programs, as about one third of jails are overcrowded. According to the Indy Star, Murphy asserts that jails do not have any drug treatment programs for those suffering from abuse. The chance for relapse is high.

A Harbor Village Detox associate comments, “What’s happening in Indianapolis is deeply concerning. When addicts are denied proper treatment for their addictions, situations can get very desperate, fast. There is a reason that there are professionally trained addiction counselors, and it is because these people need help to really do well in society. Subjecting them to circumstances where that treatment is denied them is risky, and poses a great threat to the welling of that individual.”

For the betterment of all, Harbor Village Detox is extending its services to the families of those who will be affected by the recent transitioning from prison to jail. The facility provides drug and alcohol treatment, and subsequent halfway house programs for those who need the stability of continued help after drug detoxification and rehabilitation.
