Baron Honda and Baron Used Car, located in Patchogue, New York, is one of Long Island’s largest auto dealerships. It also had a problem with crime. The type of crime experienced included breaking into the dealership, damaging vehicles and stealing valuables from the cars. Owner Ron Baron had had enough so he turned to World Wide Security of Garden City.
“The criminal activity Baron Auto was experiencing is sadly typical for this type of business, our response to it is anything but; we installed the most advance technology to end this crime spree,” explained Ken Mara, President and CEO of World Wide Security Group.
Nationwide, car dealerships are easy targets for crime involving theft to damage of vehicles. Dealerships often have a lot of open areas with large parking lots and fences that are easily scalable. There is a lot to secure.
“It is a very costly aspect of being in the auto business and it wasn’t getting better, it was getting worse,” Ron Baron explained.

“This type of crime is costly in many ways so we installed a security and monitoring system to address and eliminate it,” explained Jeff Katz, senior security consultant, World Wide Security Group.
The system consisted of an Xtralis DVR with a PA interface loaded with video analytics software, 12 high-resolution, color infrared cameras in both bullet and dome design. The service has replaced a roving guard service saving Baron thousands of dollars a month.
“The system alerts our central station operators when someone walks on the lot after hours. Because we also installed speakers at strategic locations, our operators can talk to the persons on the lot, in real time,” explained Katz.
This system is a very beneficial tool according to Katz: “If it appears the person is a tire kicker looking at vehicles, the operator uses the greeter script and lets the person know the lot is being monitored. If on the other hand, the operator sees a suspicious person or persons, they will sternly ask them to leave the premises and notify them, the dealership is closed. The operator will also dispatch the police if it appears the person is a perpetrator.”
The entire system is customized and so is the response to each potential crime scenario.

The central station component was important so operators can look in and receive pop-ups when motion is detected, giving the ability to assess a situation quickly without always contacting law enforcement.
“This is a great benefit to law enforcement because with video verification they respond to alarm as a robbery in progress, giving it greater priority. All events are captured on video increasing the apprehension and prosecution rate of the criminal,” Katz stated.
In the first two-weeks of going on line, three separate incidents were reported where potential crime was averted due to operator intervention.
“We have been cooperating with local PD and furnishing the detectives with both still images and video of the attempted burglaries,” Katz added. Even better, there hasn’t been any losses or damage since the system was installed.
