According to a recent article by the Wall Street Journal, a study found that four in 10 U.S. college students graduate without the complex reasoning skills necessary to manage white-collar work (1)—a trend that risk management company Chargebacks911 looks to counteract by providing funding relief, supporting teachers, and motivating student improvement at a younger age, all in an effort to help build a stronger and more sustainable community.
Chargebacks911 launched Get Paid for Grades, a Pinellas Education Foundation-supported program that will reward students up through high school with up to $50,000. Students who participate in and meet the conditions of the program will either receive $500 in cash in recognition of their hard work during the school year, or students who qualify may optionally select a scholarship for $1,000 instead. Additionally, Chargebacks911 will give each student an opportunity to obtain real work experience by attending a total of 12 one-hour workshops geared towards life skills such as work etiquette, professional conduct, interview skills and resume writing.
Chargebacks911 co-founder Monica Eaton-Cardone says that Get Paid for Grades aims to overcome a key flaw in the education system: the current format of the education system does not train students for the skills and characteristics needed for today’s workforce.

Unlike many scholarship programs that are solely contingent upon overall GPA, Get Paid for Grades measures the level of change among the students’ grades. The students who make the greatest change in their overall grades (for example, bringing their average grade from a C to an A) will be awarded $500 and a letter of recommendation; or, if they so choose, $1,000 towards their college tuition. In addition to this funding, the program also provides students with 12 hours of work preparedness workshops, giving the students a higher probability of overcoming the lack of work experience obstacle that many high school and college graduates face today.
In contrast to previous years, Chargebacks911 will target a select group of students, track their progress and publish a case study based on the positive results. The company will then provide an opportunity to apply for a federal grant on behalf of Clearwater High School to assist with administering the Get Paid for Grades program in a larger, more expansive effort.
This year, Get Paid for Grades will run a controlled case study. The purpose of this study is to analyze how an increase in self-confidence and life skills competency in students can ultimately increase the value and contribution to the economy. The program will be available to a limited number of students, not to exceed 100. Teachers are encouraged to nominate four students each. Understanding that attendance is a primary localized concern, this will also be a focal point. The only requirements are that the student must attend 12 one-hour workshops, and sign a release form consenting to sharing their transcript and attendance data for statistical assessment. At the end of the school year, participating students will be awarded $500 in cash for their participation in this study. Students who qualify may optionally select a $1,000 scholarship.
