Hopkins and Porter Construction, Inc recently sent Ray Hornsby, the company's General Manager, to judge a construction contest held between area high school Thomas Edison Vocational School's students.

The six competitors, all high school students from Prince Georges and Montgomery County Maryland, were part of a multi-course, progressive class in carpentry, which consisted of about 20 students total. The instructor, however, could only choose three students to represent Thomas Edison Vocational School for the competition, whose winner would then move on to a state-wide competition.

The students were given a specific design plan that they had to follow, and enough materials to completely build it. In just three hours, the competitors had to construct a design consisting of a couple walls, a small door, a window, stairs, and a rafter.

The judges then rate each finished product based on 15 different criterion, including everything from accurate measurements to sturdiness.

Hopkins and Porter Construction, Inc, which builds house additions and renovates properties, is a firm believer in such competitions, and has been happily helping to judge students' work for more than a decade. The company has even hired two of the high school's construction instructors, as well as hard working students eager to learn after they graduate.

"Not a lot of people are going into this type of trade anymore. It's hard to find employees sometimes, and if we can be a part of helping a young student realize their passion and talent for construction, then this competition it definitely worth being a part of," said Hornsby. "Seeing the kids going through these projects is a great experience. When you judge their work, you can tell them why you judge things the way you did. It’s great to point out suggestions and help the kids develop their skills. It's a really good program and I’m really happy to be involved with it."
