Fissure Creations, a small startup out of N.C., is developing augmented reality gaming experiences that were once seen as science fiction. They have launched a Kickstarter campaign for one such holographic game, called Scryer. “Technology has finally reached the point where digital adventures are no longer confined to two-dimensional screens” says Charles D’Andrea, founder. “This is the next evolution in entertainment, where experiences are driven by social interaction and all the world is truly a stage.”

After quietly launching a holographic mini-game in N.C. last year, the startup is taking their first shot at bringing a full-scale adventure to the masses through the power of crowdfunding on Kickstarter. The word scryer literally means one who reveals truthful images by looking through a crystal. “We think that name is very telling given the kind of experience we are planning” says D’Andrea. The game’s storyline is premised on a newly discovered technology that allows access to parallel universes. Players will find themselves in the middle of an inter-dimensional conflict and will have to choose who they support and who they trust.

The game’s developers say players with Android and iOS devices will be able to fully participate, but the holographic experience will become truly mind-blowing for those equipped with Epson’s Moverio BT-200 smartglasses. These semi-transparent glasses released to consumers last May by the printer & projector company are “very holo-capable” according to D’Andrea. “There is no reason to sit and wait for Microsoft or Magic Leap to get their holo-glasses technology working. We have a great product ready to go right now.”

One of the biggest challenges developers may face with games of this type is offering them in geographical areas with those who are interested in participating. The startup looks at Kickstarter as a solution to this problem as well, giving backers the ability to vote with their dollars for the city of their choice. At the base funding amount the startup is promising to deliver a complete game experience to the three most funded U.S. cities. Backers will get the chance to cast their votes through a survey at the conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign. “We may get a sense for some of the more popular cities from backer comments, but we won’t know where we’re launching until we’re funded, which is pretty crazy but also very exciting” says D’Andrea.

See the game’s Kickstarter page here. Access to the game comes with a $10 pledge. Other pledge tiers offer exclusive holo-enhanced items or even the invitation to appear in the game as a holographic character.
