U-T San Diego, the region’s most comprehensive source of news, sports, entertainment and information, proudly announced that its Sports Department was named to the winner’s list four times in the 2014 Associated Press Sports Editors’ (APSE) awards contest.

Dennis Lin’s illuminating story about Shane Kruchten, a Marine veteran grappling with PTSD who has found relief from the ghosts of war in MMA, was named as one of 2014’s top 10 features by publications with a daily circulation of more than 175,000.

Mark Zeigler's in-depth coverage of the Sochi Winter Olympics was named among the top 10 beat writing contributions in 2014 by publications with a daily circulation of more than 175,000.

In addition to the individual awards, U-T San Diego’s Sports Department earned an honorable mention (top 15) for both its Sunday Sports section and for its daily Sports section.

“This is quite an accomplishment for our staff as a whole,” commented Larry Graham, U-T San Diego’s executive sports editor. “This is the first time since 2004 that we’ve won awards in multiple sections, and it’s the first time since 2006 that our daily Sports section has been recognized for its outstanding work. When we pair these achievements with what Dennis and Mark have accomplished, we have plenty of reasons to be proud!”

“We have a great group in sports – among the very finest in the industry. I’m proud to be associated with them,” said Jeff Light, U-T San Diego’s president and editor.

The APSE awards are selected annually by leading sports editors and writers. Voting for the 2014 awards took place Feb. 7-11 at the APSE’s annual winter meeting in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The awards will be presented June 27 at the APSE’s 42nd Annual Summer Conference in San Diego.
