The competition was part of the 8th Annual Lake Michigan Shore Wine Evaluation Workshop in Benton Harbor Michigan, where over 100 Michigan wines were submitted. Michigan Master Sommelier, Ron Edwards, hosts the annual event and invites other Master Sommeliers to serve on the panel of judges. Edwards selects one or more wines from France, Germany or California as benchmarks for each category. All wines are wrapped in paper to ensure secrecy.
The panel tastes through wines in 12 categories, awarding the best Michigan wine first place. If the winner receives a higher score than the benchmark wine, it receives the coveted “Best-of-Category” Award as proof that it is truly world class.
Three Fires Wine received four prestigious Best-of-Category awards, two in 2014 and two in 2015.

- 2015 Best-of-Category Award: 2013 Unoaked Chardonnay
- 2014 Best-of-Category Award: 2012 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay
- 2014 Best-of-Category Award: 2012 Cabernet Franc
Although Three Fires Wine resides in and makes their wine in Leelanau County, some of the grapes they use were grown in Southwest Michigan. Only wine made with grapes from the Lake Michigan Shore AVA are eligible to enter the completion.
Panel of Judges
In addition to Edwards, the 2015 panel included Wayne Belding, MS from Colorado. The 2014 panel included Brett Davis, MS from Kentucky and Sally Mohr, MS from Colorado.
