Julio Ricardo Varela Joins The Futuro Media Group as Digital Media Director
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 23, 2015 -- Julio Ricardo Varela, a pioneer in digital media and founder of “Latino Rebels,” has joined The Futuro Media Group, an independent nonprofit organization producing multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diversity of the American experience, as its new Digital Media Director.
“We’re delighted to have Julio as part of The Futuro Media Group team, helping to promote stories that are not being covered in mainstream media and to share the voices of the overlooked and underrepresented through the ever-evolving and influential world of social media,” says Maria Hinojosa, President of Futuro Media Group.
As Futuro Media Group’s Digital Media Director, Varela will act as the day-to-day liaison between the organization’s multiple media platforms including Latino USA, AMERICA BY THE NUMBERS WITH MARIA HINOJOSA, Maria Hinojosa and the at-large media community. He will also manage all social and online channels, as well as providing leadership, strategic direction and input for media plans on behalf of the nonprofit organization.
“As the racial, cultural, and social landscape of America rapidly changes, the influence and empowerment of Latinos and other multicultural groups increases,” states Varela. “As with any transformation, there are challenges as well as opportunities. I am excited to join Maria Hinojosa and The Futuro Media Group as we propel this discussion to the forefront of our national dialogue.”
Established in 2011, “Latino Rebels” has become the online destination for honest commentary about US Latinos. Previously, Varela was digital producer for Al Jazeera America’s “The Stream,” an award-wining community-driven news program. He also wrote regularly for NBC Latino, becoming the site’s top opinion writer. A Harvard graduate and native of Puerto Rico (and El Bronx), Varela has been featured in many global outlets, including The New York Times, NPR, Le Monde, Face the Nation, MSNBC, Fusion, Univision, and Telemundo.
