The Las Vegas Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound Training Course returns to the Cosmopolitan Hotel July 24th and 25th, 2015. The course is one of the premier, multidisciplinary musculoskeletal ultrasound training courses in the United States. In its 8th year, the course has grown every year and has now trained nearly 1000 clinicians in this state of the art imaging modality. "We have been gratified by the trust demonstrated by so many clinicians who have attended our 2 day course," said course founder and Director, Dr. Don Buford. The course covers shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and foot and ankle, focusing on the most clinically relevant anatomy and tips for clinicians to use in their practices. "We use live models so course participants get actual hands on experience and tips from world class faculty while in a practice type setting," said Dr. Buford. "Our course is also unique because we devote lecture time to the proper way to code and bill for these procedures as well as how to integrate ultrasound into a busy clinical practice," said co-Director, Dr. Ben DuBois.
The course was founded in 2008 by two orthopedic surgeons who realized that training was the primary obstacle blocking increased musculoskeletal ultrasound use in the United States. "From the beginning we designed our course to be hands on, clinically useful, and multidisciplinary.....and these goals continue to guide our ongoing course improvements," said Dr. Buford. The course has partnered with several ultrasound vendors that share a common desire to train clinicians who care for patients with orthopedic injuries. "We have been grateful for the commitment both Fuji-Sonosite and Terason have made to education by supplying our course with state of the art equipment for 7 years," said Dr. DuBois.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a cheaper imaging choice compared to other soft tissue imaging modalities such as MRI scans. Additionally, only ultrasound can be used to guide soft tissue and joint injections in the office without any radiation or known risks. "It really is a win-win-win situation," said Dr. Buford. Patients don't have to return for multiple office visits or go to another location for a MRI scan. Office staff don't have to schedule and precertify a test and clinicians get all of the diagnostic imaging at the same office visit, leading to better clinical decision making. Finally, insurance companies can now pay for an imaging test that is less than 1/3 the cost of the old alternative. "The monetary savings is really impressive," says Dr. Buford, "if every clinician that has been to our course saves just $20,000 a year in imaging, then there is over $15 million dollars annually in health care savings being generated just from our training course".
The Las Vegas MSK Ultrasound Training Course has been filled to capacity the last 3 years running and enrollment is now open for the July 24-25, 2015 course.
