Most executives do not have an exit plan – every owner needs a plan and to be mentally prepared to let go. He also explains his thoughts on why preparing to exit a business for an owner is like planning his or her own funeral. Other dynamics and factors should be considered only when a seller is ready. He imparts to viewers his ideas on the driver capacity shortage and other issues companies face, and explains that today, owners need to do things differently than they have in the past in order to not just to recruit but to retain drivers as well. He suggests owners and managers take a look at their recruiters – they often need to change the mindset of those recruiters. In addition, looking at dispatch, thought processes often need to be redesigned. Ahern describes how changing processes is vital, from changing websites to changing the way communication with drivers happens, whether it be by text message or cell phone, when necessary. Driver appreciation is important as part of owners re-creating their brands.
