AICCCA Members Tackle Student Loan Crisis
Fairfax, VA (PRWEB) March 04, 2015 -- Excessive student loan debt and the challenges consumers face in managing that debt continues to impact our society. Millions of consumers are in default of their student loans and many millions more are delinquent. Members of the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies have been working to help consumers with student loan debt for some time. With the launch of the website, StudentLoanCounselors.org, consumers now have the ability to visit one user-friendly website for much needed information and connect with a non-profit agency providing one-on-one assistance if needed.
“The student loan crisis is very real and the situation continues to deteriorate,” said Kevin Weeks, President, AICCCA. “StudentLoanCounselors.org will help consumers who are struggling with student loan debt obtain the knowledge they need to help themselves, as well as the ability to connect with accredited non-profit organizations as needed for additional help. Much like credit counseling that helps consumers with their unsecured debt, our members who offer student loan counseling are subject to the same strict quality standards.”
StudentLoanCounselors.org is dedicated solely to student loan debt. All AICCCA counselors are educated on all facets of student loan debt, are independently certified and properly trained to provide consumers with a quality financial experience. If counseling services are utilized, the consumer will obtain a thorough understanding of all their options and be provided with a written assessment and action plan. Many programs exist to help consumers and StudentLoanCounselors.org and its affiliate agencies will explore them all.
“Many unscrupulous entities are promoting a ‘one size fits all’ solution and charging consumers significant fees for that solution,” said Weeks. “They are also misleading consumers with bogus claims and many times providing solutions that are simply not in the consumer’s best interest. We aim to change that.”
Following a complete evaluation of the borrower’s circumstances, including their goals and types of loans, counselors are able to provide debtors the “full picture” so they can make the best decision for their particular situation. These may include one or more of the following options:
- Income-Driven Repayment Plans
- Consolidation
- Postponement: Deferment and Forbearance
- Loan Forgiveness through Income-Driven Repayment Plans, Teacher Loan Forgiveness, Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Perkins Loan Cancellation
- Loan Discharge
- Resolving delinquency
