Eyebrow transplant results should not look harsh or overpowering on the face. Nape hair is a very close match for real brow hair and provides a softer, more desirable definition- Sanusi Umar MD

On his recent blog post, Dr. Sanusi Umar revealed that his work in eyebrow transplantation has been published in two highly respected journals within the medical community, The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology(JAAD) and Dermatologic Surgery Journal

As a skin and hair specialist, Dr. Umar dedicates his practice to continuous new developments that not only solve pressing challenges but ultimately help patients achieve the most natural and undetectable looking results possible. One particular area that recently captured the attention of major medical publications is the use of new types of grafts for eyebrow transplant surgery.

Nape and Leg Hair Grafts - A Better Approach For Eyebrow Transplant Surgery

Dr. Umar’s observational study on the use of nape hair and periauricular hair in six patients appeared in Derm Surgery through an article entitled, “Eyebrow Transplants- The Use of Nape and Periauricular Hair in Six Patients.” Also his manuscript, “Eyebrow Transplantation: Alternative Body Sites As Donor Sources” discussed the use of leg hair grafts for the brows. This was featured in JAAD.

In traditional eyebrow transplantation, grafts are extracted from the mid-occipital area of the scalp. These shafts tend to be very thick. When inserted into the brows, the final result can appear quite harsh and overly noticeable. Therefore, it makes sense to choose hair that more closely resembles those found in real eyebrows.

A New Technology For Remarkably Natural Looking Eyebrows

Dr. Umar invented his Advanced Follicular Unit Extraction device (UGraft Revolution ™) with specific design points to safely harvest body and nape hairs found outside the scalp. Due to their sharp growth angles, regular punches are likely to damage the follicles.

Furthermore, the issue of noticeable donor scarring has been another reason behind the reluctance in using leg and nape hairs for the brows until now. Dr. Umar’s surgical instruments create uniquely configured wound cavities to make any scar tissue that develops as negligible as possible. So areas without as much hair, like the nape and the legs are able heal with far better results.

Dr. Umar’s Patients and Their Eyebrow Transplant Results

One of the patients mentioned in Dr. Umar’s studies wanted to restore the real brow hair instead of relying on tattoos. For many years, she had over plucked her brows until they no longer grew. Eventually, she decided that her tattoos looked fake and no longer wanted to undergo her usual routines of reapplying and touching them up. Nape hair was used to help camouflage her inked arches and gave her a brand new chance at having natural looking eyebrows.

Another patients described in JAAD was a male who had very thin sparse eyebrows due to genetics. From afar, it almost appeared as though he lacked brows. And this made him feel very self conscious. He wanted better, but subtle definition. To his delight, the exact quality he wanted was achieved with leg hair.

On his blog, Dr. Umar makes the point that , “When you do any cosmetic procedure, you don’t do it so that people can tell you’ve had it done.” Flattering eyebrows will highlight the person’s eyes, so that they are noticed first, not the brows themselves.

With the soft quality that nape and leg hair can provide to the outer edges, it is now possible to create the most ideal appearance through exceptionally natural looking definition, fullness, density and shape despite one’s genetics.
