Berkshire Blanket, the largest designer and importer of blankets, bedding and throws in the United States, recently launched its “Comfort Project” in support of community service organizations that bring comfort to those in times of severe need, with a focus on domestic violence awareness groups, shelters and safe houses.
This philanthropic effort is Berkshire Blanket’s way of giving back to its community through “Acts of Comfort,” including donations of bedding and blankets to these organizations, sponsoring their events, and honoring those who have gone out of their way to embody this mission themselves.
Berkshire Blanket also sends its own comfort ambassadors to fundraising events to gift cozy items like scarves and throws to participants and supporters. Recipients are encouraged to “throw it forward” and perform their own act of comfort – to seek an opportunity to make someone else’s life more comfortable in any small way. Stories of individual acts are then shared on social media using the #ActsOfComfort hashtag.
Ending domestic violence is an overwhelming task: every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten (source). The feeling of not being safe and comfortable in one’s own home can be devastating. Imagine a family, rescued from their home in the night, victims of violence so horrendous that they literally are better off homeless. Protected by secrecy, they are brought to a “safe house” occupied by five other families they’ve never met. In this moment the mother has shown incredible strength but she also feels completely vulnerable.
With so many heartbreaking stories, the need to mobilize around awareness and organizations that are working toward solutions is clear. The Berkshire Blanket Comfort Project is driven to offer some small bit of comfort for that family – a blankie to snuggle, a throw to cuddle under together, or a blanket to hide under and escape the world. Berkshire Blanket encourages shelters to send these cozy things on with the families and offers more for the next residents.
“The world can be a cold and harsh place.” said Emily Pfeiffer, Vice President of Marketing and Digital. “We all have the opportunity to fill it with warmth and comfort, especially at a time when these things can be so hard to come by. Our customers tell us they love shopping with a brand that supports these worthy causes. We hope that our acts inspire others to take part and share their stories.”
Berkshire Blanket has brought the Comfort Project to the 11th annual Hot Chocolate Run supporting the domestic violence organization Safe Passage in Northampton, Massachusetts and the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the Red Cross “Hometown Heroes” event honoring local individuals who have shown courage, kindness and unselfish character. They are a proud ally organization of “No More,” a sexual assault and domestic violence awareness campaign.
Blankets and bedding are also continuously donated to shelters, safe houses, and similar organizations throughout the year.
