(PRWEB) March 19, 2015 -- ShapeTeacherMD presents tips to use when dehydrated.
Bottoms Up! Understanding Dehydration
Dehydration is more than simply craving a tall glass of water. It is the loss of the body’s water at a rate that is greater than what is being put back in. Whether it is due to extensive time in high heat or over exertion without proper maintenance, lack of proper hydration is nothing to dismiss. Here is a basic overview of risks associated with dehydration and how to keep on top of the situation.
Symptoms of Dehydration
Symptoms can present individually or along with others. Some of the more common ones include fatigue, thirst, dry skin and overly chapped lips, a dry mouth, headaches, constipation and dizziness. In more severe cases, sunken eyes can be a sign as well as a rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure and rapid breathing. Fever can also be present. Decreased urination is a telltale sign in both adults and children, as is a lack of tears while crying. Extreme loss of fluids can result in abnormal behavior such as delirium, confusion or slurred speech.
Benefits of Hydrating
Staying decently hydrated is clearly beneficial to keeping your organs running smoothly, but it goes beyond keeping your body standing upright and your thirst quenched. Skin is more supple and has more elasticity, minimizing fine lines and blemishes while offering a more vibrant complexion. You also lower the risk of injury as your muscles are better equipped to handle exertion. The digestive tract can function better, decreasing indigestion and occurrences of acid reflux. Properly hydrating also increases mental stamina, focus and alertness.
How to Stay Hydrated
The best way to keep a handle on your fluid levels is to prevent dehydration in the first place. When you are expecting to exert your body in a strenuous manner, up your fluid levels a day or so prior to the actual activity. Replenish fluids throughout and continue to hydrate following. During any illness, ingest as much clear liquid as possible as your body will need extra fluids as it fights to heal itself. This is especially true in cases of fever and diarrhea. When traveling, keep hydration a priority to fend off jet lag. When it high altitudes keep in mind that dehydration can set in at a more rapid rate than at sea level. Any time you change climates, adjust your fluid intake accordingly.
Keeping a water bottle handy isn’t the only way to keep the fluids in you. Add foods with high water content to your diet such as grapes, melons, berries, pineapples and squash. Add brothy soups to your menu as well as smoothies and fresh juices.
Dehydration can sneak up quickly and do a fair amount of damage to your body in a short time. Keep yourself hydrated to maintain a healthy body, clear head and ultimate energy levels.
