When we learn to flourish with religious diversity, we can work well with those with whom we have profound religious or political disagreements.

WorldReligionNews.com, one of a new breed of religious news sites, publishes its latest Featured Contributor article, “Why do religious differences disturb us so much?,” by Dr. Rita M. Gross, Professor Emerita, Comparative Studies in Religion, author, and Senior Dharma Teacher) at Mindrolling Lotus Garden Meditation Center, focused on her latest book, Religious Diversity—What’s the Problem? Buddhist Advice for Flourishing with Religious Diversity. The book is a Buddhist “theology of religions.” While Christians have dominated discussions on how members of their own religion should evaluate other religions, Dr. Gross, a Buddhist scholar-practitioner who is also a Buddhist critical and constructive thinker is loyal to both academic study of religion and traditional Buddhist teachings.
Dr. Gross examines the exclusivist, inclusivist, and pluralist positions on theology of religion and comes to the conclusion that the Christian theologies of religion all focus on the differences of religions being a problem, rather than focusing on why difference of religion is such a problem.
She also warns on using one’s religious identity as their ultimate identity. One should not be defined solely by their religion. We are also family members, community leaders, artists, business owners, and so on.
“When we learn to flourish with religious diversity, we can work well with those with whom we have profound religious or political disagreements. We do not have to agree; we only need to be agreeable across religious differences. To learn how to flourish with religious diversity, it is helpful to recognize that religious identity is only one of our myriad, hybrid identities.”
