PlasmaKnife(TM) for microplate renewal, a first-in-class product

IonField Systems launched a series of new, innovative products at SLAS 2015 in Washington DC, February 7-11, that allow the reuse and recycling of life science consumables. The PlasmaKnife plasma cleaning system, a breakout, first-in-class product for renewal of standard and specialty microplates, was introduced as an early adopter program. The entirely new TipCharger 2.0/1536 for plasma cleaning of 1536 pin tools or fixed robotic pipettor tips, and the upgraded 2.0 TipCharger for 96 and 384 formats, were also launched to extend the TipCharger product line to a more comprehensive robotic tip cleaning offering.

“Our goal as a company is to dramatically reduce hazardous waste and the massive consumption of plasticware coming from Life Sciences laboratories,” said Paul Hensley, founder and CEO of IonField Systems. “The interest in the PlasmaKnife at SLAS was phenomenal.”

Single-use microtiter plates are a significant cost factor in HTS campaigns for new drugs and for many in vitro diagnostics applications. The PlasmaKnife uses an automated cold plasma treatment process to restore plastic microtiter plates for reuse. At SLAS, IonField presented data showing that virtually all microplates can be reused multiple times and some for a near infinite number of times. Cost reductions are expected to be 98% (50 reuses), before considering the savings from an overall reduction in plastic hazardous waste, reduced staff exposure to this waste, significant time savings in system setup and shut down, and less time spent ordering and restocking plates.
