Tampa, FL (PRWEB) March 17, 2015 -- Tomorrow, thousands of individuals will flood the United States with anti-tobacco campaigns for the 20th annual Kick Butts Day. This year, the Lung Institute is joining the fight for a smoke-free life by hosting an event during lunch in Lykes Gaslight Park. As part of the Kick Butts Day theme of kicking tobacco butts once and for all, Lung Institute team members urge people to quit smoking just for one day; we believe if you can quit for one day, you may be inspired to quit forever.
In an effort to lower the number of smoking-related illnesses, the Lung Institute will raise public awareness by offering a kick-off contest and a chance to play in the park. With opportunities to win prizes, take home giveaways and engage with team members, the Lung Institute encourages citizens to join in the fun in downtown Tampa on Kick Butts Day.
Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers individuals to become health advocates and speak out against Big Tobacco. Kick Butts Day is organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a leading force in the fight to reduce tobacco use and its deadly total. Recent statistics estimate that smoking kills more than 480,000 people annually; 25 percent of those deaths are from a chronic lung disease like COPD.
As a leading cause of debilitating lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease, the health advocates at the Lung Institute hope to raise awareness about the risks of smoking. It is estimated that smoking causes nearly 80 percent of COPD deaths. Quitting smoking is the first step to a disease-free life. For those already diagnosed, kicking the tobacco habit could greatly increase quality of life.
