Catapult Learning Releases New Ebook, “Teaching for the Stretch”
Camden, New Jersey (PRWEB) March 18, 2015 -- Catapult Learning today announced the release of its newest ebook, "Teaching for the Stretch: Strategies for Building Conceptual Understanding" by Andrew Ordover, Ed.D. In the ebook, Dr. Ordover raises the question of what it means for students to “learn” and to “know,” and challenges teachers to teach not only for base-level knowledge but for a deeper level of understanding that encourages students to ask questions, problem-solve, and think critically.
“I wrote 'Teaching for the Stretch' to help teachers find some simple and straightforward ways to push classroom discourse up to those higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy that we’re always talking about but seldom reaching,” explains Dr. Ordover. “It’s all about the kinds of questions we ask our students, and whether we’re willing to take a few moments to explore their thinking and challenge them to more deeply develop their initial, fact-based answers.”
Dr. Ordover, Catapult Learning’s Vice President of Product and Curriculum, offers a rational and thoughtful voice in the often-divisive world of education. "Teaching for the Stretch" discusses the importance of conceptual play in support of Academic Learning Time, providing multiple examples, specific strategies for teachers, and extensive references to the supporting research.
“When we talk about conceptual play, we’re not talking about distracting kids from academic work by having them play games,” explains Ordover. “We’re talking about actually playing with the academic content to come to a deeper understanding of what it is. I hope the ebook—and the workshops we’re building around it—can give teachers something tangible that they can implement without having to completely overhaul their lesson plans,” says Ordover.
"Teaching for the Stretch" is available for free download on the Catapult Learning website. A professional development institute of the same name can also be scheduled with a school or district. The full-day institute, including a keynote address and breakout sessions for teachers and leaders, focuses on genuine student engagement, where the student is at the center of the learning experience, actively working with and manipulating academic content.
