Litigation Insights is honored to announce that its CEO, Merrie Jo Pitera, Ph.D., will facilitate a panel discussion on Using Themes in an Opening Statement during the Litigation Masters’ Trial Demonstration led by Jerry Blackwell of the Blackwell Burke firm at the upcoming National Bar Association 35th Annual Midyear Conference & Gertrude E. Rush Awards Dinner being held March 26 - 29 in St Louis, Missouri.

The purpose of the National Bar Association (http://www.nationalbar.org), founded in 1925, is “to advance the science of jurisprudence, uphold the honor of the legal profession, promote social intercourse among members of the bar, and protect the civil and political rights of all citizens of the several states of the United States.” Gertrude E. Rush (1880-1962) was the only woman co-founder of the NBA. Among her many personal and professional achievements, she was the first African American woman admitted to practice law in Iowa and assumed a leadership role in many civil rights groups. Each year the NBA awards the Gertrude E. Rush Award to well-deserving persons who exemplify the spirit and commitment of Gertrude E. Rush.

Dr. Pitera’s academic credentials include Ph.D., Communication Studies, University of Kansas; M.A., Social Psychology, University of Kansas; and, B.A., magna cum laude, Psychology, Clemson University. She is a psychology and communications expert who specializes in complex litigation and trial consulting and has more than 25 years of experience in the field. She helps clients perform at their highest levels and has managed hundreds of cases during her career. She understands what’s at stake and she knows how to help clients build persuasive themes.

In addition to being a jury specialist, Dr. Pitera also prepares witnesses for depositions, trials and congressional hearings. She is a frequent national and international speaker on jury behavior and witness prep methods. She routinely publishes articles in a variety of law journals on jury selection and trial preparation.
