International recruiters of patent and trade mark attorneys, Fellows and Associates, report a recent increase in overseas activity in the Intellectual Property sector

“Attendance at conferences such as INTA and the AIPPI World Intellectual Property Congress are integral in maintaining the direction in which we want the business to take” says founder and managing director Pete Fellows. “We have always taken the view that business relationships founded on years of communication are far more beneficial to us than focusing on quick cash deals. Networking at events such as the Annual Meeting has helped us create these relationships and it is also a fantastic stepping stone in developing our international business.”
The international arm of the Fellows’ business does seem to be most definitely on the up with the team noting a significant increase in instructions across the US and Europe of late. In particular they are currently in need of a sales specialist in Chicago, a US patent attorney in Washington D.C. and an Intellectual Property recordals manager in Belgium.
“We have always sporadically picked up instructions from overseas clients whilst at networking events or through our presence on line, however for one reason or another most of them no longer become a pressing need for the client or we are unable to source suitable candidates” explains Phillipa. “What is interesting is we have recently seen a notable increase in roles situated outside of the UK that we have been successful in filling and that have sparked ongoing relationships with the clients with whom we now regularly work”.
The team have also highlighted a rise in opportunities for IP professionals moving cross jurisdictionally; and not necessarily just to and from the UK. “The recent surge in activity in the IP market has really had a positive effect on firms and their outlook on recruitment” says Pete. “They are becoming more open to less conventional candidates and understand that in order to fill more complex needs they need to be open to recruiting from overseas. We are now sourcing candidates from across the world, including India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand to match roles across Europe, the UK and the US”.
