Strong Women, Strong Girls Jump into Spring (JiS) in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH, PA (PRWEB) March 25, 2015 -- Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG) today announced the return of its annual Jump into Spring (JiS) event, taking place Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the Jewish Community Center (5738 Darlington Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15217). In its 6th year, JiS brings together over 300 young girls, grades three through five, their families, and close to 200 college women from five area universities who mentor the girls.
This special event will feature a pre-jump-roping Zumba session, musical and dance performances, a celebrity jump-rope competition featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Passion, community resource providers, and special guest local children’s author Sharon Flake.
Sabrina Saunders, Executive Director of Strong Women, Strong Girls, said, "Jump Into Spring is an exciting, fun event that raises awareness about the importance of mentoring young girls in our communities and we are glad to bring it back! Our focus is on helping girls achieve positive self-esteem that, ultimately, translates to improving their outlook on success and the world around them. Additionally, the impact of our program on college women who mentor is powerful, having the effect of improving their leadership skills, increasing their commitment to community, and influencing their interest in staying in Pittsburgh after graduation."
SWSG's mentoring model engages professional women to mentor college-aged women who, in turn, mentor girls in grades three through five located in economically under-served communities. Currently in its ninth year, SWSG Pittsburgh has successfully impacted over 3,000 local girls, recruited hundreds of college mentors and volunteers and offers programs in 32 local schools and community centers throughout Allegheny County.
JiS is supported locally by generous sponsors that include UPMC, UPMC Health Plan, Comcast NBC Universal, Giant Eagle, Best of the Batch Foundation, and Nugo Nutrition. Opportunities for photos and video will be available.
