Timmons Group to Develop Application for Mobile At-Sea Data Collection
Richmond, VA (PRWEB) March 23, 2015 -- Timmons Group, a leader in innovative geospatial solutions, signed a contract with the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) to design a custom application for field agents, called samplers, to collect data remotely at sea. This application is the idea child of the joint venture between PSMFC and Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW).
The application will be developed for ODFW’s samplers, which are located on commercial fishing vessels to easily record daily fishing trip details while out in the Pacific Ocean with no internet connectivity. The details include information about the boat, number of anglers on the boat, gear type used, and information about each catch effort, called drifts, and fish caught.
After the information has been collected and the sampler’s device has internet connectivity, the data is sent to the Recreational Fisheries Information Network (RecFIN) database housed at the PSMFC office in Portland, Oregon. The data is used to better understand the number of fish species caught on recreational fishing vessels, the amount that were kept on board, released, the specific measurements per fish, and information regarding sensitive or protected species.
Due to the extreme environment where this application will be used, Timmons Group will develop this application using an iterative method. A high-degree of attention will be paid to the interface design to create extremely simplistic interfaces and streamlined workflows that support the end-users.
